A Port Day in Falmouth, Jamaica!

IMG_1518

I have been to Jamaica once before, while staying at an all-inclusive in Negril; and this time I was lucky enough to visit Jamaica again while cruising on Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas!

The cruise ship port in Falmouth has been recently redone, which makes it quite nice. It has shops, restaurant and you can go into the town for more souvenirs and to get a taste of the local flavor. There isn’t a lot to do in Falmouth, so I suggest getting out of the port. You can either book an excursion through the cruise ship or grab a taxi to explore more of the island. Montego Bay is just a short taxi ride away or you can go the opposite direction to Discovery Bay or Ocho Rios.

We negotiated a taxi ride for a round-trip drive to Ocho Rios and back for $50 and also visited the Green Grotto Caverns in Runaway Bay (See my review of the Green Grotto Caverns on their TripAdvisor page)

Do keep in mind that a bit of patience is needed in Falmouth and some of the local taxi/tour operators and shop keepers can be a bit aggressive. One has to simply remember that when traveling to a country like Jamaica, that their economy and livelihood greatly depends on the tourism industry, so it is important for them to try to get your business, and it is important for us to support the local communities we travel to.

Side Note: There is a great place called Taste Jamaica that I would recommend for cheap drinks, good food and free internet access! (it is located just a bit further after you exit the port in Falmouth). Many of the crew members come here.
